Tommaso Bussola is one of the benchmark producers of Valpolicella Classica. Established in the 1970s in San Pietro in Cariano, the estate gained international recognition under Tommaso Bussola, whose meticulous vineyard management and low-intervention philosophy have elevated traditional Valpolicella wines to cult status. Bussola is renowned for producing richly concentrated yet remarkably balanced wines, combining traditional appassimento techniques with modern precision. The Cà del Laito Ripasso is considered one of the estate's signature wines, offering exceptional depth and complexity while remaining faithful to the elegance of the Valpolicella Classica terroir. A full-bodied Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore produced primarily from Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, with a small proportion of Molinara. After the initial fermentation, the wine undergoes the traditional ripasso method, whereby it is refermented on the skins of Amarone, imparting greater richness, texture and complexity. It is then matured for approximately 24 months in a combination of large oak casks, tonneaux and barriques, followed by extended bottle ageing before release. The result is a powerful yet refined Ripasso with the concentration of Amarone but greater freshness and drinkability. "An Amarone-like nose with spicy dried berries... full-bodied with fresher currants and berries, supported by medium-grained tannins. Delicious. The real deal for Ripasso." -- James Suckling |
