Domaine Robert Ampeau & Fils is one of Burgundy's most distinctive family estates, based in Meursault. Established in the early 20th century, the domaine achieved international recognition under Robert Ampeau, whose philosophy differed markedly from that of most Burgundian producers. Rather than releasing wines shortly after bottling, Ampeau matured them in the estate's cellars—often for 10 to 20 years or more—before offering them for sale. This practice ensured that collectors could purchase mature wines with impeccable provenance and optimal bottle ageing. Today, the domaine continues under Michel Ampeau, preserving this unique tradition. The estate farms approximately 10 hectares across the Côte de Beaune, including vineyards in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Auxey-Duresses, Volnay, Beaune and Savigny-lès-Beaune. The Savigny-lès-Beaune village wine is produced from carefully selected parcels of Pinot Noir planted on limestone and clay soils. While Savigny is often associated with elegance rather than power, Robert Ampeau's traditional winemaking and extended cellar ageing produce wines with remarkable longevity and tertiary complexity. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the 1990 Savigny-lès-Beaune comes from one of Burgundy's finest vintages of the last century. After more than three decades of maturation, it has developed exceptional aromatic complexity while retaining impressive freshness. The wine shows a mature garnet colour with brick highlights. Aromas of dried cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry and rose petals are intertwined with notes of forest floor, mushroom, cedar, tobacco, leather and sweet spices. On the palate it is medium-bodied with silky, fully resolved tannins and vibrant acidity that keeps the wine remarkably lively. Layers of mature red fruit, sous-bois, dried herbs and earthy minerality unfold into a long, graceful finish. The 1990 vintage possesses more depth and fruit richness than many surrounding vintages, making it one of the standout mature releases from the domaine. Drinking Window: Now–2028. The wine is fully mature and should be enjoyed in the near term. Thanks to the exceptional 1990 vintage and Robert Ampeau's extended cellar ageing, well-stored bottles continue to show freshness and complexity. Decant gently for 30–45 minutes only to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to open without risking excessive oxidation.
