Domaine Robert Ampeau & Fils is one of Burgundy's most distinctive family estates, based in Meursault and established in the early 20th century. The domaine rose to prominence under Robert Ampeau, who became renowned for an unconventional philosophy: releasing wines only when he believed they had reached an ideal stage of maturity. This practice of extended ageing at the estate—often for 10 to 20 years before release—has made Robert Ampeau one of Burgundy's most respected sources for perfectly cellared mature wines. Today, the estate is managed by Michel Ampeau, who continues this tradition. The domaine farms around 10 hectares of vineyards across the Côte de Beaune, including holdings in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Beaune, Auxey-Duresses, Volnay and Savigny-lès-Beaune. The Savigny-lès-Beaune village wine is produced from several parcels planted on limestone and clay soils, showcasing the appellation's hallmark elegance, bright acidity and fragrant Pinot Noir character. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the 1996 Savigny-lès-Beaune is a classic expression of the exceptional 1996 Burgundy vintage, a year celebrated for its vibrant acidity and outstanding ageing potential. After nearly three decades of bottle age, the wine displays a garnet colour with a brick-red rim. The bouquet has evolved into aromas of dried cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, forest floor, mushroom and cedar, alongside hints of leather, tobacco, dried herbs and autumn leaves. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky tannins that have softened over time, while the vintage's lively acidity provides freshness and lift. Mature red fruit, earthy complexity and savoury spice lead to a long, elegant finish that reflects both the terroir of Savigny-lès-Beaune and the estate's traditional winemaking philosophy. Wine collectors consistently praise Robert Ampeau wines for their remarkable longevity, noting that the estate's late-release philosophy often means even older vintages retain impressive freshness and structure. Drinking Window: Now–2030. Well-stored bottles are fully mature and display the tertiary complexity expected from an aged Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir. Decant only briefly to remove sediment, as prolonged aeration may diminish the wine's delicate mature aromas. |
