Tasting Notes

Domaine Robert Ampeau & Fils is one of Burgundy's most distinctive family estates, based in Meursault. Established in the early 20th century, the domaine became famous under Robert Ampeau, whose unique philosophy was to age wines in the estate's own cellars for many years before release. Rather than selling wines shortly after bottling, Robert Ampeau believed they should only be released when they had begun to show their true character, giving collectors the rare opportunity to purchase perfectly cellared mature Burgundy with impeccable provenance. Today, the estate continues under the stewardship of Michel Ampeau, maintaining this celebrated tradition.

The domaine farms approximately 10 hectares across the Côte de Beaune, including holdings in Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Auxey-Duresses. Les Écusseaux is one of Auxey-Duresses' finest Premier Cru vineyards, situated on limestone and clay slopes bordering Volnay. Its terroir consistently produces Pinot Noir that combines the perfume and finesse associated with Volnay with the firmer structure typical of Auxey-Duresses. The 1999 vintage remained in the domaine's underground cellars for many years before its official release, exemplifying the estate's philosophy of patience and longevity.

Produced from 100% Pinot Noir, the 1999 Les Écusseaux comes from one of Burgundy's finest modern vintages, renowned for concentration, balance and exceptional ageing potential.

Now fully mature, the wine displays a garnet colour with brick highlights. The bouquet reveals aromas of dried cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry and dried rose petals, layered with forest floor, cedar, mushroom, sweet spice and earthy mineral notes. On the palate it is medium-bodied with silky, beautifully integrated tannins supported by vibrant acidity that has preserved remarkable freshness. Mature red fruit, sous-bois, dried herbs and subtle savoury nuances lead to a long, graceful finish. The wine demonstrates the elegance and complexity that have become hallmarks of Robert Ampeau's late-release Burgundies.

Drinking Window: Now–2032. The 1999 vintage remains beautifully expressive thanks to Robert Ampeau's meticulous cellaring. Well-stored bottles continue to offer remarkable freshness alongside developed tertiary aromas of truffle, dried flowers and woodland notes. Decant only briefly to remove sediment, as prolonged aeration may diminish its delicate mature bouquet.
