Tasting Notes

E. Pira & Figli is one of Barolo's most celebrated estates, located in the village of Barolo. The winery was founded in the late 19th century, but its modern reputation is inseparable from Chiara Boschis, who acquired the historic estate in 1990. As one of the original members of the influential "Barolo Boys" movement, Boschis helped modernise Barolo through meticulous vineyard management, shorter fermentations and more refined oak ageing, while maintaining respect for Nebbiolo's ability to express terroir.

Today, the estate farms approximately 12 hectares of vineyards, including prestigious crus such as Cannubi, Via Nuova, Mosconi and Terlo. The Mosconi vineyard, located in Monforte d'Alba, is one of Barolo's great crus, renowned for producing wines of power, concentration and longevity. The 2012 Barolo Mosconi was fermented in rotary fermenters and matured in a combination of French oak barriques and large oak casks, reflecting Boschis' balanced approach during this period.

Produced from 100% Nebbiolo, the 2012 Mosconi reflects a warm vintage that delivered ripe fruit while retaining freshness and structure.

Deep garnet in colour, the wine opens with aromas of black cherry, raspberry, dried rose petals and blackberry, layered with liquorice, white pepper, crushed stone and sweet spice. On the palate it is full-bodied yet remarkably refined, combining concentrated dark fruit with firm, polished tannins and vibrant acidity. Mosconi's hallmark richness is complemented by floral lift and mineral precision, leading to a long, persistent finish with notes of red berries, spice and savoury earth. While approachable with decanting, the wine has the structure to reward extended cellaring.

" The 2012 Barolo Mosconi is one of the big surprises of this tasting. This is a gorgeous expression with a deep and enduring sense of balance. The wine offers excellent intensity with black fruit and spice, nicely contrasted against more subtle tones of licorice, red rose and polished river stone. The tannins are firm and tight, yet they show the latitude needed for long cellar-aging." -- Wine Advocate

" Very delicate and aromatic with dried flowers and raspberry, blackberry undertones. Full body, yet balanced and very refined. Love the white pepper and berry aftertaste. Better in 2019." -- James Suckling

" The 2012 Barolo Mosconi is big, powerful and explosive, with a real baritone expression of fruit and searing tannins. Wines from this site have historically needed quite a bit of bottle time to fully emerge." -- Vinous
