Tasting Notes

Founded in 1957, Capanna is one of the historic family-owned estates of Montalcino. Located on the northern slopes of the appellation near Montosoli, the Cencioni family has built a reputation for producing classically styled Brunello that combines structure, elegance and exceptional longevity. Today, the estate is managed by the second and third generations of the family, who farm approximately 23 hectares of organically cultivated vineyards.

Nicco is one of Capanna's most distinctive wines, produced only in exceptional vintages from a special selection of the estate's oldest Sangiovese vineyards. The wine honours Niccolò ("Nicco") Cencioni, a member of the founding family, and is made exclusively from a proprietary Sangiovese clone selected over decades from the estate's oldest vines. Produced in very limited quantities, Nicco represents Capanna's most refined expression of Brunello di Montalcino, combining the elegance of the northern zone with exceptional concentration and ageing potential.

Made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso (Nicco selection), the 2018 Nicco is fermented in stainless steel before maturing for several years in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by extended bottle ageing prior to release.

The cooler 2018 growing season produced a Brunello of remarkable finesse and aromatic precision. The wine opens with aromas of black cherry, wild blackberry, plum, dried rose, orange peel and sweet spice, layered with notes of clove, tobacco, forest floor and graphite. The palate is full-bodied yet beautifully poised, offering ripe red and dark fruits, polished tannins and vibrant acidity. Its mineral backbone and persistent finish reflect the vineyard's northern Montalcino terroir, while its balance promises outstanding development over the coming decades.

" Charismatic aromas of dark forest cherry and leafy earth with a wondrous display of enigmatic oak, which enriches and enfolds beautifully and will enable long ageing." -- Decanter

" A very fine-tannined Brunello with cherry, orange peel and floral aromas and flavours. Medium-bodied, refined and beautifully balanced with remarkable elegance." -- James Suckling

" A classic Brunello nose featuring cherry, orange peel, soil and graphite with fresh fennel and mint. Bright acidity flows over smooth tannins, creating a harmonious and persistent finish." -- Wine Enthusiast
