Cordero di Montezemolo is one of Barolo's oldest family estates, with a history spanning more than 19 generations. The Montezemolo family has owned vineyards in La Morra since 1340, making them one of the longest-established landowners in the Langhe. The winery is centred on the historic Monfalletto Estate, a 51-hectare property surrounding a distinctive cedar of Lebanon planted in 1856, which has become the estate's emblem. Today, the winery is managed by Alberto and Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo, who combine traditional Barolo craftsmanship with modern vineyard management. Certified organic, the estate farms some of the Langhe's finest crus, including Monfalletto, Gattera, Enrico VI, Villero and Bricco Gattera. The Monfalletto Barolo is the estate's flagship classic cuvée, produced from a blend of selected vineyards across La Morra to capture the elegance, perfume and balance that define the commune. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by approximately 24 months of ageing in large Slavonian oak casks and French oak barrels of various sizes, before further bottle maturation. Produced from 100% Nebbiolo, the 2018 Monfalletto reflects a vintage that favoured finesse and aromatic complexity over sheer power. Bright garnet in colour, the wine offers aromas of candied cherry, wild strawberry, pressed violet and rose petals, complemented by notes of black liquorice, blood orange, sweet spice and iron-rich earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is polished and harmonious, with finely integrated tannins supporting vibrant acidity. Layers of ripe red fruit, cinnamon, orange peel and savoury minerality lead to a persistent, elegant finish. Compared with richer vintages such as 2016 or 2019, the 2018 is more approachable in its youth while retaining the structure for graceful ageing. " A certified organic wine... candied cherry, pressed violet and earthy or ferrous notes create a long and very polished finish. Black licorice appears on the close. " -- Wine Advocate " Lots of dusty spice to the red berries on the nose, developing into oak notes on the medium- to full-bodied palate. There's plenty of structure and firmness here and a long, firm finish of spicy oak and fruit. From organically grown grapes. " -- James Suckling " The 2018 Barolo Monfalletto is a bold, fruity wine that should drink well with minimal cellaring. Red plum fruit, cinnamon, rose petal, spice and blood orange fill out nicely over time." -- Vinous |
