Tasting Note :

CastelGiocondo is one of the historic estates of the Marchesi Frescobaldi family, whose winemaking heritage in Tuscany spans more than 700 years and 30 generations. Located on the south-western slopes of Montalcino, the estate is considered one of the original and most prestigious properties in the Brunello di Montalcino appellation. The name "CastelGiocondo" derives from the medieval fortress that overlooks the vineyards, and the estate has been producing wine for centuries.

The estate covers approximately 815 hectares, with around 152 hectares planted to vineyards between 300 and 450 metres above sea level. The diverse combination of marl, clay, sandstone and limestone soils, together with significant diurnal temperature variation, allows Sangiovese to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic complexity. CastelGiocondo was among the first four estates to bottle Brunello di Montalcino commercially and remains one of the benchmark producers of the appellation. The wine is aged for approximately five years, including at least 24 months in oak casks, followed by extended bottle maturation before release.

Produced from 100% Sangiovese, the 2018 CastelGiocondo Brunello reflects a vintage that favoured elegance and balance over sheer concentration.

The wine displays an intense ruby-red colour with aromas of blackberry, blueberry, blackcurrant and wild berries, complemented by floral notes of violet and dog rose. Layers of black pepper, cardamom, liquorice and subtle mineral nuances add further complexity. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with refined, well-integrated tannins, lively acidity and excellent harmony. The finish is long and persistent, marked by fresh red and black fruit, savoury spice and a distinctive mineral character. The 2018 vintage offers a more approachable Brunello in its youth while retaining the structure for long-term ageing.

" Very aromatic and beautiful with blackberry and black-cherry aromas. Hints of flowers. Medium-bodied and extremely refined. Bright and elegant. Drink or hold. " -- James Suckling

" Plums, hoisin sauce, savoury nuances, ripe red berries, dark chocolate, coffee and toasted hazelnuts. Punchy and forward with lovely purity, sleek tannins and a lifted finish that gives both energy and definition. " -- Decanter

" Richly textured and packed with dark fruit, black cherry and dried blackberry. The wine shows good concentration with integrated tannins and balanced acidity, making it immediately appealing while retaining Brunello character. " -- Wine Advocate

" Elegant, with a vibrant structure supporting cherry, raspberry, plum, earth and underbrush flavours. Bright acidity and fine tannins keep the wine focused through the persistent finish." -- Wine Spectator
