By Farr is one of Australia's most revered family-owned wineries, situated in the Moorabool Valley, Geelong, Victoria. Founded by Gary Farr in 1994 after extensive experience in Burgundy—including vintages at Domaine Dujac—and at Bannockburn Vineyard, the estate has played a pivotal role in establishing Geelong as one of Australia's premier cool-climate wine regions. Today, the winery is led by Nick Farr, whose meticulous vineyard management and low-intervention winemaking have earned By Farr an international reputation for producing some of Australia's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The Sangreal Vineyard was the first vineyard planted by the Farr family in 1994. Situated on a north-facing slope with limestone over bluestone and ironstone-rich soils, it consistently produces the most elegant and perfumed Pinot Noir in the By Farr range. The fruit is predominantly whole-bunch fermented, fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts and matured for approximately 18 months in French oak, before bottling without fining or filtration to preserve purity and site expression.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the 2020 Sangreal is a benchmark expression of Geelong Pinot Noir, balancing richness with remarkable finesse.

Deep ruby in colour, the bouquet is intensely aromatic with wild strawberry, red cherry, raspberry and rose petals, layered with smoked herbs, five-spice, forest floor, black tea and subtle charcuterie notes from whole-bunch fermentation. The palate is silky and beautifully textured, combining vibrant red berry fruit with savoury complexity, fine acidity and seamlessly integrated oak. Elegant tannins provide structure without heaviness, while the finish is exceptionally long, perfumed and mineral-driven. The 2020 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest recent releases of Sangreal, showcasing exceptional harmony and ageing potential.

Drinking Window 2024–2035. While already captivating for its perfume and seamless texture, the 2020 Sangreal has the concentration, natural acidity and refined tannin structure to evolve gracefully for another decade. With bottle age, it is expected to develop greater complexity, revealing notes of dried rose, truffle, sous-bois and exotic spice while retaining its hallmark elegance and purity.
