Tasting Notes

Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson is a highly regarded family estate based in Saint-Romain, in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy. The Buisson family has cultivated vineyards in Saint-Romain since the 1940s, and today the domaine is managed by brothers Franck and Frédérick Buisson, representing the fourth generation. The estate farms approximately 19 hectares across Saint-Romain, Meursault, Pommard and neighbouring appellations.

The domaine has become one of the leading producers in Saint-Romain through its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, with certification achieved in the 2000s. Minimal intervention in the cellar, low yields and careful élevage allow each vineyard site to express its individual character. The Sous Roche lieu-dit is planted with mature Pinot Noir vines averaging around 50–60 years of age on limestone and marl soils, producing wines that combine the freshness typical of Saint-Romain with surprising depth and concentration.

The 2020 Saint-Romain Sous Roche is produced from 100% Pinot Noir. The grapes are hand-harvested, approximately 90% destemmed, fermented with gentle extraction and matured for 12 months in French oak barrels.

The warm but balanced 2020 vintage yielded a wine with generous fruit while retaining the hallmark freshness of Saint-Romain. It offers aromas of blackberry, wild raspberry, red cherry, violets and subtle spice, underpinned by earthy, limestone-driven minerality. Medium-bodied with fine tannins, vibrant acidity and excellent precision, the wine combines purity of fruit with savoury complexity and a long, saline finish. Despite its approachable nature, it has the structure to develop gracefully over the next decade.

"Ripe blackberry and pomegranate fruit, with a spicy edge. The ripeness is in no way overdone, and the structure on the palate shows a lovely balance between the tannin, fresh acidity and plentiful extract." -- Decanter

"A terrific effort... bursts with scents of wild berries, plums, loamy soil and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long, saline finish. It transcends expectations of the appellation." -- Wine Advocate
