Tasting Notes

Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson is one of the benchmark estates of Saint-Romain in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy. The Buisson family has been established in the village for centuries, with documented winegrowing dating back to 1758, although wines have been bottled under the family name only since 1947, when Saint-Romain received its own appellation. Today, the estate is managed by brothers Franck and Frédérick Buisson, the eighth generation of the family.

The domaine farms approximately 19 hectares of certified organic and biodynamically managed vineyards across Saint-Romain, Meursault, Pommard and Corton. Their philosophy centres on low yields, meticulous vineyard work and minimal intervention in the cellar to express each lieu-dit faithfully. The Sous Roche vineyard sits on limestone and marl soils beneath the limestone cliffs surrounding Saint-Romain. Old Pinot Noir vines, averaging around 50 years of age, produce wines of concentration, freshness and distinctive mineral character.

The 2021 Saint-Romain Sous Roche is produced from 100% Pinot Noir from organically grown vines. The grapes are hand-harvested, around 90% destemmed, gently fermented and matured for 12 months in French oak barrels.

The cooler 2021 growing season produced a classic Burgundian expression with vibrant acidity and aromatic precision. The wine displays aromas of raspberry, wild strawberry, red plum and rose petals, layered with white pepper, forest floor and subtle spice. The palate is medium-bodied and finely textured, with silky tannins, bright acidity and pronounced limestone-driven minerality. Compared with the richer 2020 vintage, the 2021 is more elegant, floral and immediately approachable while retaining excellent ageing potential.

" The Buisson brothers' finest red this year is the 2021 Saint-Romain Sous Roches, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and supple wine evocative of plums, raspberries and rose petals. With attractive purity and depth of fruit, this represents a particular success in this more challenging year. " -- Wine Advocate

Noticeably fuller purple with more body to the bouquet, showing greater fruit than flowers. There is impressive density, a touch of white pepper and excellent persistence on the finish. " (Barrel Sample) -- Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
