The Frescobaldi family has been producing wine in Tuscany for over 700 years, with a documented winemaking history dating back to 1308. As one of Italy's oldest and most respected wine families, Frescobaldi owns some of Tuscany's most prestigious estates, including CastelGiocondo in Montalcino, Castello Nipozzano in Chianti Rufina, Castiglioni, Ammiraglia and Tenuta Calimaia. Tenuta Perano, acquired in 2014, is situated in the heart of the Chianti Classico DOCG in Gaiole in Chianti. The estate's vineyards form a natural amphitheatre between 450 and 550 metres above sea level, where high elevations, Galestro soils and significant day-to-night temperature variation produce Sangiovese of exceptional freshness, aromatic intensity and elegance. The estate has quickly become one of Frescobaldi's flagship properties for expressing the refined character of Chianti Classico. The 2022 Tenuta Perano Chianti Classico Riserva is produced primarily from Sangiovese, complemented by a small proportion of Merlot. Grapes are hand-harvested from the estate's finest hillside vineyards before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with frequent cap management to maximise colour, flavour and tannin extraction. The wine is then matured for 24 months in oak barrels, followed by further bottle ageing before release. The 2022 vintage benefited from a cold, wet winter and well-timed rainfall during the growing season, allowing the grapes to achieve excellent aromatic concentration while maintaining freshness. The resulting wine is full-bodied yet refined, offering vibrant acidity, firm but velvety tannins and impressive structure. Aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry and sour cherry are complemented by sweet violet, cloves, black pepper, leather and tobacco, leading to a long, savoury finish with excellent ageing potential. " Described as structured and linear, with polished, refined tannins running the length of the palate. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture, vibrant freshness and a long, persistent finish, highlighting the balance and elegance of the 2022 vintage." -- James Suckling |
