Tasting Notes

The Castello Pomino estate, owned by the historic Marchesi Frescobaldi family, is one of Tuscany's most important white wine estates. The Frescobaldi family has over 700 years of winemaking history, while Pomino itself has been recognised for exceptional wine production since the 19th century. In 1855, Chardonnay was first planted at Pomino, making it one of the earliest introductions of the variety to Italy. In 1878, the estate won a Gold Medal at the Paris Exposition for the quality of its wines.

Benefizio is one of Italy's landmark white wines. First produced in 1973, it was the first Italian white wine to undergo barrel fermentation. Since 2005 it has been released as Benefizio Riserva, produced exclusively from the estate's highest-altitude Chardonnay vineyard (680–730 metres above sea level), where cool temperatures preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. The vineyard's sandy, stony, mineral-rich soils contribute to the wine's distinctive elegance and longevity.

The 2011 vintage is made from 100% Chardonnay grown in the Benefizio vineyard. Following partial cold maceration, the wine is fermented in 50% new French oak barriques and 50% once-used barriques, with most of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation. It is then aged for 10 months in barrel followed by 4 months in bottle before release.

The warm yet balanced 2011 growing season, with cool August nights, produced a Chardonnay of richness and precision. The wine displays aromas of ripe peach, yellow apple, tropical fruit, vanilla, toasted hazelnut, acacia honey and citrus blossom. The palate is full-bodied and creamy, balanced by vibrant acidity and a pronounced mineral backbone. Notes of baked apple, lemon curd, buttered brioche and subtle oak spice carry through to a long, elegant finish with excellent ageing potential.

" Aromas of sliced cooked apple, lemon curd, vanilla and hints of dried pineapple. Full-bodied, layered and creamy, with bright acidity and a long, flavourful finish. Rich yet fresh. " -- James Suckling

" Ripe orchard fruit, toasted almond, vanilla and white flowers lead into a creamy palate supported by lively acidity and mineral freshness. Elegant and beautifully balanced. " -- Wine Enthusiast
