Petrolo is one of Tuscany's most respected boutique estates, situated in the Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC in southeastern Tuscany. Owned by the Bazzocchi family since the 1940s and led today by Luca Sanjust, the estate has earned international acclaim for its commitment to organic viticulture, low-intervention winemaking and expressing the unique terroir of its vineyards. While Petrolo is best known for its iconic Merlot, Galatrona, the estate has also revived historic indigenous varieties. Bòggina B is produced from Trebbiano Toscano vines propagated from selections originally planted at Petrolo in the 1970s. The wine pays tribute to the great dry Trebbianos once produced in the Valdarno, a style historically prized since the Middle Ages and served to the papal court and Florentine nobility. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in French oak tonneaux, followed by more than 15 months of lees ageing with regular bâtonnage, resulting in one of Italy's finest expressions of Trebbiano. The estate is certified organic. The 2019 Bòggina B is made from 100% Trebbiano Toscano. Despite the variety's reputation for neutrality, Petrolo transforms it into a complex, age-worthy white through meticulous vineyard work and Burgundian-inspired élevage. The wine is concentrated yet remarkably precise, offering aromas of lemon zest, ripe orchard fruit, white flowers, beeswax, flint and subtle vanilla. The palate is layered and textural, combining vibrant acidity with chalky minerality and impressive depth. Citrus, stone fruit and saline notes persist through a long, refined finish, giving the wine both immediate appeal and the capacity to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more. " Gorgeous aromas of lemon rind, lemon cream, waxy dried apples and hints of cedar and vanilla. Full-bodied, with a round, lightly chewy palate and a long, intense finish. Fantastic fruit and complexity, yet always sublime and subtle." -- James Suckling " Described as a beautifully balanced Trebbiano with remarkable precision, mineral depth and concentration, combining textured fruit with vibrant freshness and the structure for extended ageing. " -- Wine Advocate " A serious white with lemon zest, lemongrass and grapefruit aromas with hints of vanilla. Excellent acidity but also a weight in the mouth, juicy but viscous with a lift at the end. A great food wine. " -- Decanter |
